Attack is the best form of defence

An entertaining local derby at The Britannia yesterday ended 2-2 but it was a case of what if?

We might be pleased but like the last few games it could have been so much more.

A point away to Everton is a great result but we conceded in the 88th and it felt like a loss. It was always going to be tough at Goodison Park but we should have held on. An Ebanks-Blake penalty salvaged a point at home to a Villa but this was a poor performance. Villa failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck and at home it really was an opportunity missed against an underperforming Villa. The point against Stoke yesterday was the one I most pleased with. I failed to catch the game but what I have read in the papers and seen on Match of the Day, we did well to come back. Super Mick was disappointed that we didn’t push on to claim the three points.

This could ultimately cost us. We need all the points we can get to stay up and if we attacked more then these three draws could have been three wins.

This coming Saturday sees Arsenal head to Molineux and the only way we will get anything out of this game is by attacking. This might sound crazy against the mighty Arsenal but what have we got to lose? We’re at home and we need to intimidate them. They won’t like defending from the very start with 28,000 of us Wolves fans pushing the boys forward. We have tended to take the safe option and work our way into the game for the first 20 minutes. Villa were there for the taking but we didn’t want to take the initiative. This has to happen against The Gunners or we will be ripped apart.

One player who could give us the incentive to go for it on Saturday is Nenad Milijas. He came on against Stoke yesterday and made things happen. He set up both goals with his wand like left foot and from what I heard he created an awful lot more in the second half. How much does he have to do to make Mick realise that he is the real deal? The honest Karl Henry has to be dropped on Saturday. There is no creativity in the heart of midfield with Castillo and Henry both playing. Castillo has looked the more impressive of the two and he also knows Milijas from Red Star Belgrade. Ok, there will be more spaces in midfield for Arsenal to exploit but it is a risk worth taking if we are going to have a chance. The Serb is of international quality and we need players like Milijas if we are going to have a chance against Arsenal.

Watch this space for all the build up to the game against The Arsenal on Saturday.

Up the Wolves!

  1. A fair point, Paddy. But I think by taking the game to Arsenal, Wolves will come undone. Arsenal hit so well on the break and unfortunately your defence looks unable to cope down the flanks. Arshavin needs to be contained orelse it could be a matter of how many. As long as Wolves are able to defend well enough then a point may be the best you can hope for.
